چکیده

[1] Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the interaction of a semidiurnal internal wave (IW) beam with the nonuniform stratification of an upper ocean pycnocline. During the initial stage of the interaction, higher harmonics originate after reflection of the IW beam at the caustic and are trapped in the pycnocline. In cases where the pycnocline thickness is sufficiently large (approximately larger than twice the dominant wavelength in the beam), the incoming beam undergoes a parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) during refraction through the pycnocline at later time. Consequently, there is significant energy transfer to subharmonic motions that exhibit exponential growth with a rate of 2/3 day . The instability is demonstrated to be a resonant triad interaction by diagnostics in both wave frequency and wave number spaces. Smaller vertical scales originate during the PSI, lead to wave steepening, and produce convective overturns. This work identifies a potential mechanism that drives IW beam degradation during its propagation through the upper ocean.

PSI to turbulence during internal wave beam refraction through the upper ocean pycnocline

A numerical study based on large eddy simulation (LES) is performed to investigate the nonlinear interaction of a semidiurnal (M2) internal wave beam with an upper ocean pycnocline. During refraction through the pycnocline, the wave beam undergoes parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) with formation of waves with (1/2)M2 frequency. The three-dimensional LES enables new results that quantify ...

Parametric subharmonic instability of internal gravity wave beams

Internal gravity wave beams are time-harmonic plane waves with general spatial profile that arise in continuously stratified fluids owing to the anisotropy of this wave motion. In the last decade, these wave disturbances have been at the forefront of research, both from a fundamental perspective and in connection with various geophysical flow processes. Oceanic internal wave beams, in particula...

Near-inertial parametric subharmonic instability

New analytic estimates of the rate at which parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) transfers energy to high-vertical-wavenumber near-inertial oscillations are presented. These results are obtained by a heuristic argument which provides insight into the physical mechanism of PSI, and also by a systematic application of the method of multiple time scales to the Boussinesq equations linearized a...

Internal wave instability: Wave-wave versus wave-induced mean flow interactions

In continuously stratified fluid, vertically propagating internal gravity waves of moderately large amplitude can become unstable and possibly break due to a variety of mechanisms including with some overlap modulational instability, parametric subharmonic instability PSI , self-acceleration, overturning, and convective instability. In PSI, energy from primary waves is transferred, for example,...

The wave instability pathway to turbulence

One way that large-scale oceanic internal waves transfer their energy to small-scale mixing is through parametric subharmonic instability (PSI). But there is a disconnect between theory, which assumes the waves are periodic in space and time, and reality, in which waves are transient and localized. The innovative laboratory experiments and analysis techniques of Bourget et al. (J. Fluid Mech., ...
